Module Description: It is a windy spring day in a rural town in New Mexico. A group of friends and their children go to the local park for the afternoon. One of the children, a six year old girl, wanders off with her brother to play on a set of bleachers. A fall to the concrete pavement below renders her unconscious and the mother seeks medical attention for her at a local medical clinic. This module discusses pediatric head, neck and spine trauma in children. Robert Sapien, MD, Chief of the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine and John Phillips, MD, Pediatric Neurologist at the M.I.N.D Institute; both from the University of New Mexico; discuss medical management issues on this topic.
Module 2 Pediatric Head Neck and Spine Trauma | Part 2

Module Description: In Part 2 of 2, the mother and child arrive at a rural clinic and the medical staff manage this young girl based on the assessment of her injuries and treat her with the resources available. A special breakout interview with Katherine Chavez, RN discusses clinic preparation for pediatric emergencies and recommended education. The interview discussion between Robert Sapien, MD and John Phillips, MD continues as they discuss more in- depth diagnostics and medical management of children with head, neck and spine trauma.

Module Description: Starting the day on time is a challenge for many families. A mother and son are late and in a hurry as they get into their car. The 8 yo boy gets into the front seat and improperly restrains himself as he places the shoulder strap under his arm. Moments later they are involved in a motor vehicle collision and the boy sustains traumatic injuries. Robert Sapien, MD, Chief of the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine and Stephen Lu, MD, Director of Burn and Trauma services; both from the University of New Mexico; discuss pediatric trauma especially abdomen and chest trauma as it relates to this filmed scenario. Module Description: In Part 3 of 3, the MVC scenario resumes with the transport decision made to transfer the pediatric patient to a trauma center using air medical helicopter services. Robert Sapien, MD and Stephen Lu, MD continue their discussion on pediatric trauma focusing on transfer criteria and transport modes. The module and series concludes with current pediatric trauma and emergency education resources available.
Module 6 Pediatric Multiple Patient Incidents

Module Description: It is recess at an elementary school and a out of control motor vehicle veers into a group of children on the playground injuring multiple children. The school nurse is the first medical responder on scene. Don Scott, EMT-P, Emergency Manager for Bernalillo County, NM shares his wealth of experience and knowledge with interviewer Rob Elgie, RN on the topic of pediatric multiple patient incidents. Discussion focuses on first responder triage, scene management and emergency preparedness; emphasizing special considerations when children are involved. This course is a must for all healthcare providers in preparation for disaster management.

Pediatric Musculoskeletal Trauma | Part 1
Module Description: In Part 1 of 2, a father and son are enjoying time together riding their ATV in open space near their home. The outing ends tragically as his son takes the ATV for a solo ride and is thrown from the vehicle when he crashes in an unexpected ravine at high speed. This module focuses on prehospital pediatric trauma care with emphasis on musculoskeletal injuries. The filmed scenario includes EMS response, treatment and transport to the pediatric trauma center. Included is a filmed interview discussion on this topic moderated by Sara Skarbek-Borowska, M.D., with Linda Warren, EMT-P.

Module Description: In Part 2 of 2; the 13 yo male, pediatric ATV accident patient, is transported to University of New Mexico Pediatric Emergency Department by EMS for trauma care. This module focuses on emergency trauma care with emphasis on the assessment, diagnosis and management of pediatric musculoskeletal injuries. Included is a filmed interview discussion on this topic moderated by Sara Skarbek-Borowska, M.D., with Elizabeth Szalay, M.D. , Chief of Pediatric Orthopaedics at UNM Carrie Tingley Hospital.
