PART-TIME FACULTY AND CLINICAL STAFF POLICY
Approved by Dean Paul B. Roth: 07/01/1999
It is the policy of the University of New Mexico ("UNM") School of Medicine that:
-
There is a general prohibition against:
- The recruitment and hiring of regular (contract) part-time faculty
and clinical (patient care) staff; and
-
Changing from full-time to part-time
status for regular (contract) faculty and clinical staff.
-
Exceptions to this policy must be approved in writing by the chairperson and
by the Dean. The chairperson and the Dean will annually evaluate these
exceptions to assure that they remain in the best interests of the UNM
School of Medicine.
-
Decisions as to whether an exception to the prohibition against employing
part-time faculty and staff will be based on the following:
-
Whether there may be an adverse impact on UNM or the UNM School of Medicine,
-
Whether the time or effort devoted to an outside activity may interfere with
the faculty or staff member’s ability to meet his/her full obligations to the University,
-
Whether a temporary need exists on a short-term basis for a part-time employee.
-
This policy is applicable to the following categories of employees:
-
Contract faculty,
-
Staff (research and clinical), and
-
Full-time faculty at the Veterans Administration Medical Center.
-
If an employee is permitted by exception to work part time, that
employee’s UPA benefits, if applicable, may be prorated and the UPA
contribution percentage will be equivalent to the employee’s FTE status.
The employee will be responsible for paying the remaining cost of the
benefits, if any.
-
If an employee is permitted by exception to work part time, the employee’s
salary/compensation will be proportionately reduced.
-
This policy will become effective for all current regular (contract)
faculty and clinical staff beginning July 1, 2000. This policy will
be in effect and shall apply to all new hires beginning July 1, 1999.
