Elaine Sanchez Dils is currently an Assistant Professor and the senior clinic coordinator for the Division of Dental Hygiene. Additionally, she is the student clinic manager. She teaches several didactic courses including dental anatomy and senior clinic lectures. Elaine also teaches instructional design courses within the Division's Master's Degree program.
Professor Sanchez Dils has published articles including writings on teledentistry and its impact in the United States, developmentally disabled patients, as well as head and neck anatomy. Moreover, she has submitted several other manuscripts for review for publication.She is currently writing several chapters to be included in dental and dental hygiene textbooks that will be published in 2008.
Elaine has been asked to present at several professional meetings.Topics for these presentations have included the state of New Mexico's children's oral health, dental treatment of developmentally disabled persons, and telemedicine.At the 2007 American Dental Hygiene Association's annual meeting, she presented Dental hygiene clinical assessment incorporating graded and non-graded feedback: design, implementation and results.
Elaine has practiced dental hygiene in multiple settings including private practices, prisons, and pedodontic practices. She treated patients with developmental disabilities at Carrie Tingley Dental Clinic for the past 6 years, and is currently seeing patients at UNM's Novitski Hall Dental Clinic.
Elaine is an active member of the New Mexico Dental Hygienists' Association and is a past president of the UNM Division of Dental Hygiene Alumni Association. She has also served on and chaired several university committees.
Elaine Sanchez Dils graduated with honors, and was awarded first prize for research conducted while completing her Bachelor of Science degree at the University of New Mexico. Recently, she was student nominated and selected to the Who's Who of American Educators. Her students also nominated her for the Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award sponsored by the University of New Mexico CASTL program. Professor Sanchez Dils was also selected, from a pool of national dental hygiene educators, for the 2007-2008 American Dental Education Association - Glaxo Smith Kline Dental Hygiene Teaching Fellowship.
