Department of Dermatology

Residency/Training

The Department of Dermatology’s Residency Program is accredited by the American Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). House officers must have completed a post graduate year in a primary care field such as Surgery, Internal Medicine, Family Medicine or a transitional year before they can begin the three-year dermatology program. The program is approved for six residents, including five regular residents and one resident supported by a grant funded by the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD). UNM Dermatology was one of ten programs to receive this competitive grant from the AAD. All residents treat patients under the direct supervision of the faculty. They participate in weekly conferences including text and actual case material (click here for complete description of required conferences). Local community physicians, such as dermatopathologists, lecture to the residents in order to broaden their education. Residents are encouraged to attend and present at local and national conferences.

For further information on our residency program and the application process, access the Dermatology Graduate Medical Education website.

Medical students interested in pursuing a 4-week clinical and/or nonclinical dermatology rotation, access the Office of Student Affairs website for further information and application.
