Barbara L. Mathis received her M.A. degree from the University of New Mexico in 1979 and her J.D. degree from the UNM School of Law in 1982. Since August 2007, Mrs. Mathis has been involved with the Ethics arm of the ECHO research project at the UNM HSC Institute for Ethics. Mrs. Mathis serves as co-chairman of the UNM HSC Hospitals Biomedical Ethics Committee, and is a member of the Committee’s Ethics Consultation Services. Prior to her retirement in 2005, Mrs. Mathis was a member of the University Counsel’s office at the Health Sciences Center where she served as Medical Risk Manager (1988-1994), Executive Director of Medical Staff Affairs (1994-1997), and as Counsel for Clinical and Medical Staff Affairs (1997-2005). Mrs. Mathis participated in drafting the New Mexico Uniform Health Care Decisions Act which became law on July 1, 1995.
