Institute For Ethics

Ethics, Law & Medicine

The Ethics, Law & Medicine Forum was instituted as one means for the UNM Hospitals and the Health Sciences Center to educate staff and community about patient and provider rights and responsibilities as found in the federal Patient Self-Determination Act of 1990, the New Mexico Uniform Health Care Decisions Act, the New Mexico Mental Health Advance Directives Act, and in other relevant health laws. The Forum series is an opportunity for community members and health and legal experts to examine and discuss the interrelatedness and effects of ethics, law and medicine in current health issues.

Past Forums have examined such topics as:

  • obesity in children,
  • proposed and current mental health laws,
  • medical negligence,
  • transgender health access,
  • blood transfusion and the right of refusal,
  • and medical ethics in an age of terrorism.

The Forum series is free and open to all.

Your suggestions for topics and your participation in the Forum are welcome and encouraged.
