COE Junior Faculty Support

Financial support to eligible junior faculty and their departments to pursue research & publication. Includes training in research and proposal and scholarly writing. Mentoring by a senior medical school faculty member.

COE Speakers Series

Nationally recognized speakers on issues concerning health care access, education, research, and health policy. Special consideration to Hispanic and Native American health concerns, and career development.

Medical Student Support

Mentoring for Hispanic and Native American medical students with faculty and community-based physicians.

USMLE, Step 1 Board Review Course. Coordinated and supported by the COE at the UNM SOM, in collaboration with the Office of Cultural & Ethnic Programs, and Department Chairs. USMLE review books and resources for student use.

Support for student research projects, and career development: information resources.

Undergraduate Student Support

Summer Honors Research Program. Paid biomedical research laboratory experience for selected undergraduate science majors.

Information on applying to medical school, the biomedical graduate program, and the combined MD/PhD program. Advice on preparing for medical school, the application processs, what to expect of medical school.

Cultural Competence

Promoting clinical experience with underserved populations using case studies and a variety of clinical experiences throughout medical school, including clinical rotations, clerkship and preceptorship opportunities, leading to an understanding of the implications of a diverse population in the provision of health care services, education, and promotion.

Grand Rounds and other guest speakers on cultural competence in clinical care.

Outreach and Student Development

Medicine and Biomedical Research Careers. Recruitment and outreach to residents, medical students, undergraduate and pre-college students. Information resource.
