The Family Listening Project

Introduction: Since 2005, the Family Listening Program (FLP), an intergenerational (child/ parent/elder) family prevention program, has been co-designed and put into practice in partnership with two New Mexico tribes, with tribal community members as creators and facilitators of the resulting programs. Funded by the Native American Research Centers for Health (NARCH) rounds III and V, an extensive evaluation of child participants found increased cultural identity, coping, self-confidence, and decreased measures of depression. For adult participants, findings included increased awareness about the importance of native language, culture, health, family communication and increased coping and control. Currently, a NARCH grant is funding the adaptation of the FLP program with a third New Mexico tribe. All three tribal partners are uniquely distinct in language, culture, history where community context is embedded into a culturally-centered prevention program driven by Tribal Research Teams.
