Beyond the Call of Duty

The Beyond the Call of Duty Award Program is designed to recognize and reward individuals who, consistent with the departmental mission, have gone above and beyond their formal, identified job duties to exceed the needs of our patients, visitors, faculty and staff, or “Beyond the Call of Duty”. The program is open to all faculty, staff, students, and volunteers who are part of the UNM HSC Department of Internal Medicine.

Jolyne McCrary

Beyond the Call of Duty Winner for the fall of 2010: Jolyne McCrary

"Ms. McCrary has successfully run numerous initiatives in the department of medicine. The biggest challenge this year was organizing and overseeing and seeing to completion faculty promotion applications, committees, and approvals. Despite deadlines, dealing with many layers of people and paper she did this professionally, calmly, collectively and successfully. She is a delightful person to work with and goes out of her way to ease paper work, administrative hurdles and other barriers to get the job done and minimize onus on faculty. She embodies all ideal aspects of administrative support for faculty and the administration in the department of medicine, and the health sciences center. Not only does she wear many hats, she wears them all with integrity, enthusiasm and completeness. She goes the extra mile to make sure people get their jobs done. She is not only hard working and has a strong work ethic; she is also kind, helpful and supportive. While she has a lot on her plate (too much) she is always willing to help out, fill in gaps and ease processes. She is a gem.

"Additionally, she has done this with a very positive, enthusiastic and helpful attitude. I not only admire her work ethic and dedication but as I have gotten to know her through my own promotion process, I consider her a friend and valued colleague. She deserves this award and many, many more." (Nomination by Kathleen Colleran, MD)

Hallway Awards

The Department of Internal Medicine recognizes its employees by highlighting outstanding dedication. The department has awarded more than 60 awards since 1999 to faculty, housestaff, and staff. The Hallway Award winners for September 2010 are:

Faculty Award

Suzanne Emil, MD & Michel Boivin, MD

Runner-up: Mark Rohrscheib, MD

Nomination comments:

“In November of last year, my 37 brother underwent a total hip replacement at Lovelace hospital after the development of avascular necrosis in the setting of history of chronic steroid use for his Lupus. He was released and a week or so later was re-admitted to Lovelace. With sequence of events and the help of Dr. Boivin, he was transferred to UNMH (the hospital in which I have done my medical school training, residency and internship, and now GI training) easily and quickly at our request. He had a very long and complicated course, and subsequently passed away in our MICU with exceptional love and care of the MICU team, nurses, staff, techs, and doctors 5 months later in April 2010.

“ …. For a large part of his prolonged stay, Dr. Boivin and Dr. Emil were his primary team doctors. They always took time to explain to me, my brother, his wife and the rest of my family what was planned and why. What they were thinking and why. They would often come visit even if they were not on service. They would sit and talk with Ernie, not as another patient to see, but as a real person with real family (and children). Even if they were rushed, Ernie never knew it. At the moment in time that they were with him, they made him feel as if he was the most important person in the world. I could go on and discuss very specific situations in my brother's 5 month long stay in which Drs. Emil and Boivin made us (Ernie, his wife and our family) feel incredibly lucky and special.” ….

“I am honored that my family was able to experience wonderful people who I feel privileged to work with. I would be honored if Dr. Emil and Dr. Boivin could be recognized for the amazing and everlasting impact they have had on my life and the lives of my sister, parents, sister-in-law, and most importantly, my brother.”

Housestaff Award

Zorisadday Gonzales, MD

Runner-up: Saman Hayatdavoudi, MD

Nomination comments:

  • "Dr. Gonzales always gives everything 100%. She does a super job and needs to be recognized."

Staff Award

Maryhelen Pridham

Runner-up: Shauna Carter-Rodriguez

Nomination comments:

  • “... because of the incredible task she completed in the past eight months with regard to implementation of a process required by the Joint Commission for our institution to remain accredited. With her leadership a new process of Professional Practice Evaluations was successfully implemented for the 250 medical staff of the Department of Medicine. This requirement required a significant change in workflow for the Department. The Office of Clinical Affairs of University Hospital is very pleased with her work.”
