The Division of Rheumatology at UNM is under the leadership of Dr. Arthur D. Bankhurst, Professor of Medicine and Immunology, and is committed to providing outstanding care of patients with the full range of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases, promoting programs of excellence in basic and clinical research, and offering state-of-the-art training to medical students, house officers, fellows, and other health professionals. In the pursuit of these goals, the Division has refined its systems for the delivery of clinical care while investing resources to enhance its teaching and research programs.

The Division was established in 1969; Dr. Bankhurst has been the Chief since 1979. Dr. Sibbitt joined the division in 1981, after completing his fellowship. Dr. Bankhurst and Dr. Sibbitt have published over 350 manuscripts over the course of their tenure at the University.

Dr. Bankhurst and Dr. Sibbitt have consistently been on the cutting edge of new therapies over the course of their careers, including providing clinical trials for the major biologics which helped revolutionize Rheumatology in the late 1990s.
