Department of Neurology
Chairman's Page

The Neurology Department at the University of New Mexico
plays a critical role in the health of the State. The Faculty have expertise in all of the
major subspecialty areas in Neurology, including multiple sclerosis, stroke, Alzheimers disease,
vascular cognitive impairment, epilepsy, movement disorders, neuromuscular diseases,
neuroinfectious diseases, pain and neurological disorders of children. In many of those areas,
faculty at the Health Sciences Center represents the only resource in the State for
subspecialty-trained experts.
The Department has major research funding for stroke,
multiple sclerosis, vascular cognitive impairment, epilepsy, and Alzheimer’s
disease. These research programs involve
scientists in both the clinical and basic sciences. We are able to offer patients experimental
treatments for many conditions. We have
advanced neuroimaging in computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging
(MRI), angiography, and magnetoencephalography (MEG) for patient care and
research studies.
Faculty in neurology work closely with our colleagues in
neurosurgery to provide state-of-the-art care for patients with surgically
treatable conditions, such as aneurysms, vascular malformations, hemorrhages,
epilepsy surgery, deep brain stimulation for Parkinson’s disease, and pain
management.
We have four residents in neurology each year for a total of
12 residents. Fellowship opportunities
are available in neurophysiology, stroke and neuroimmunology.
In January 2009, we plan to open a new center for
Neurological Diseases in the Domenici Hall on the North Campus. This free-standing facility will combine
clinics with the neuroimaging facilities.
Clinical research will be conducted in the new facility along with
subspecialty neurological care.
