Department of Neurology
Adult Neurology Residency Minimum Qualifications
Thank you for you interest in our
Neurology Residency Training Program at the University of New Mexico School of
Medicine. To be a candidate for application to our program, we require
the following:
1. The applicant must have graduated from an
accredited medical school within five years of application or is in a US
postgraduate training program.
2. The applicant must have
an excellent documented command of the
English language.
3. The applicant must have the appropriate
physical and mental health to be responsible for patients in a rigorous training
environment.
4. The applicant must not have had significant
academic difficulty during his/her undergraduate medical education; for example,
failing or marginal grades in a significant portion of the curriculum or a
failure to pass USMLE, Parts I and II.
5. If the
applicant will not or has not
graduated from an ACGME accredited institution, he/she needs to have
demonstrated that he/she has performed significant and supervised clinical
work in the United States preferably in an academic setting, i.e., need to have
at least one year’s training in a supervised setting in the United
States.
6. The applicant must be a US citizen, possess
a green card or possess a J-1 Visa prior to initiation of training.

completed application packet, we will contact you regarding interviews, at
which time we will send out a brochure describing our program in more detail.
We have four openings for the PGY II level beginning July 1st of any given year. We
also have two preliminary positions, with a possibility of four positions, in the Department of Internal Medicine each year. You must
apply to the Internal Medicine Neurology Preliminary position (Code 1962140P1) separately. We are obligated
to go through the NMRP and you must be signed
up with them. We begin reviewing applications at the beginning of
September and start interviews around the end of October or beginning of
November, continuing until the end of December or beginning of January.
The Neurology and Internal Medicine residency training programs work closely together to select
candidates for the year of internal medicine training required for the neurology residency. Names of applicants for the internal
medicine positions are submitted in the same order in the rank list to optimize the opportunities for our applicants who want to do all
4 years of training at UNM.
Child Neurology Residency Minimum Qualifications
Thank you for you interest in our
Child Neurology Residency Training Program at the University of New Mexico School of
Medicine.
Our child neurology position is essentially a 5-year position, with the first two years in pediatrics. Therefore, you will have to
apply to our pediatric department through ERAS. Since there is a transition in process from the SF Match to ERAS, for this year, in order to apply
to the Child Neurology Program, please contact the AUPN (Association of University Professors of Neurology).
At the present time, we have one pediatric position open starting June 2012, with the position in child neurology beginning July 2014.
To be a candidate for application to our program, we require
the following:
1. Prior to entering any child neurology residency program, the applicant
must have met the prerequisite training from an ACGME accredited residency program and it must have consisted of either
two years of pediatrics OR one year of pediatrics and one year of medicine OR one year of pediatrics and one year of
neuroscience research.
2. The applicant must have graduated from an accredited
medical school within seven years of application or is in a US
postgraduate training program.
3. The applicant must have an excellent, documented command of
the English language.
4. The applicant must have the appropriate physical and mental
health to be responsible for patients in a rigorous training environment.
5. The applicant must not have had significant academic difficulty during
his/her undergraduate medical education or previous residency training; for example, failing or marginal grades in a significant portion of the curriculum or
a failure to pass USMLE, Parts I and II
6. The applicant must be a US citizen, possess
a green card or possess a J-1 Visa prior to initiation of training.
We will not consider any applicants who do not meet all of our requirements!
