 The University Of New Mexico Stroke Center has been certified by the Joint Commission as an Advanced Primary Stroke Center and has been recognized by the American Heart Association / American Stroke Association for achieving the highest levels of quality of care.


As a leading academic stroke center it is also the first comprehensive multidisciplinary center of its kind, in the State of New Mexico providing comprehensive diagnosis and treatment for stroke and cerebrovascular disorders.  We have assembled a team of neurologists, neurosurgeons, nurse specialists, basic scientists, and clinical researchers with the goal of significantly improving the chances that a patient can prevent, or recover optimally, from a stroke.


Conditions and disorders we provided care for:
          •     Ischemic stroke
          •     Transient ischemic attack (TIA or "mini-stroke")
          •     Cognitive Impairment after stroke (Vascular dementia)
          •     Critical narrowing or blockages of brain blood vessels
          •     Intracerebral hemorrhage
          •     Aneurysms, subarachnoid hemorrhage
          •     Vascular malformations of the brain
          •     Vascular tumors of the brain and head/neck region
          •     Venous occlusions such as dural sinus thrombosis and cortical vein thrombosis
 
When to call 911
Stroke is an emergency!  The quicker the patient gets to the hospital, the better the chances for effective treatment. Call 911 for any of the following:
          •    Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body
          •    Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
          •    Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
          •    Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
          •    Sudden, severe headache with no known cause
