Occupational Therapy Graduate Program

Pre-Professional Educational Requirements

To be eligible for admission into the Occupational Therapy Graduate Program, applicants must complete a bachelor’s degree program in their discipline of choice. A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and a minimum grade of B (3.0) on all prerequisite courses are required. Prerequisite courses must be completed within the past five years. See the Application Instructions for information on prerequisite course waivers. Students enrolled in prerequisite courses at other institutions must provide evidence that the prerequisite courses at the institution they are attending are equivalent to those at UNM. In addition, it is strongly recommended that students volunteer to work with an occupational therapist to become familiar with occupational therapy prior to applying to the graduate program.

Prerequisite Courses

Developmental Psychology (PSYCH 220) 3 credits - Description of the more salient aspects of the behavior and development of children and adolescents. Particular emphasis is placed on pertinent psychological research and practical applications to life situations. (Prerequisite: General Psychology)

Abnormal Behavior (PSYCH 332) 3 credits - Review of the historical, scientific, and ethical issues in the field of psychopathology. Categorization of deviant behavior is regarded as less important than theories of abnormal behavior development, systems of therapy, and relevant research. (Prerequisite: General Psychology)

Introduction to Probability & Statistics (MATH 145) 3 credits - An introduction to some of the basic ideas in probability and statistics; analysis of numerical data and descriptive statistics, probability and basic probability models for statistics, sampling and statistical inference, techniques of statistical inference illustrated by examples from a variety of fields; of the use of the computer in statistics. (Prerequisite: Intermediate Algebra)

Human Anatomy & Physiology I (BIOL 237) - 3 credits - An integrated study of human structure, including functions of the skeletal, muscular, nervous, and cardiovascular systems. (Prerequisites: General Biology and General Chemistry)

Human Anatomy & Phsiology I - Laboratory I (BIOL 247L) - 1 credit Lab work using cadavers. Anatomy stressed with appropriate physiological work. Topics integrated with 237. (Courses taken at another institutions that use only animals are accepted).

Human Anatomy & Physiology II (BIOL 238) - 3 credits - Continuation of 237. Cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, excretory, reproductive, and endocrine systems.

Human Anatomy & Physiology II - Laboratory II (BIOL 248L) - 1 credit BIOL 247L continuation. Topics integrated with 238. (Courses taken at other institutions that use only animals are accepted).

NOTE: Refer to the “OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY GRADUATE PROGRAM INSTRUCTIONS,” if you: 1) have taken a similar course with a different course number and/or name at an out-of-state institution, or 2) would like to request that prerequisites be waived based on comparable knowledge gained by life experiences of alternative learning methods.
