Department of Pediatrics
Division of Hematology and Oncology
Hematology offers diagnostic evaluation and comprehensive
follow-up for the child with hematological (non-malignant) problems or
coagulation disorders. Immunologic disturbances are evaluated in
conjunction with the immunology and infectious disease service. The
Division's Ted R. Montoya Hemophilia Program provides comprehensive care to
the individual (child and adult) with hemophilia and other hereditary
bleeding disorders. Adult care is coordinated with the transfusion
service. When appropriate for the care of the patient, a statewide
home therapy program for specialized blood products is provided.
Outreach visits to the patients' hometowns are an important part of this
program. The laboratory expertise needed to establish the correct
diagnosis is an integral part of the program. The Division
participates in part of the International Collaborative Gaucher's Group.
Oncology offers a multidisciplinary care team to deliver
state-of-the-art care for children facing childhood cancer. The team
includes physicians, nurses, social workers, play therapists and clinical
pharmacists. Both conventional and experimental childhood cancer
treatment are available through UNM's participation in clinical research
protocols of the National Cancer Institute and the Pediatric Oncology Group.
