Education

Neonatal/Newborn Program

UNM Hospital Obstetric Services delivers over 4,000 babies per year, all of whom are cared for by our residents in the mother/baby unit, Intermediate Care Nursery, or in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit.

  1. The Level I nursery emphasizes bonding between parent and infant. Here, residents learn evaluation and management of well newborns, including circumcision, breast-feeding and developmental evaluation. The attending staff includes both pediatric and family medicine faculty. Attending rounds are held daily and includes a curriculum on breast feeding.
  2. The Level II Intermediate Care Nursery cares for up to 18 infants in transition. This may include jaundice, hypoglycemia, neonatal sepsis, and prematurity. Housestaff work with dedicated and skilled nurses, social workers, discharge planners and attendings in helping the infants and their families bond, to address medical needs and learn necessary care skills, and to prepare families for transition to home.
  3. The 52-bed Level III Newborn Intensive Care Unit is a state-of-the-art center that provides services to neonates from all over the region. Residents work with attending staff, trained neonatal nurse practitioners and nurses to attend deliveries, resuscitate infants and to care for premature infants and critically ill infants with a variety of medical issues.
