The Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization has
designated the HSC’s Office of International Health (Global Health
Programs) as a Collaborating Center on Innovative Health Workers
Education, Service and Research Models. Drs. Art Kaufman and Mark
Hauswald are co-directors of the Center.
WHO is the health arm of the United Nations. The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), is WHO in North, Central and South America and it notified UNM of its designation, the "PAHO/WHO Collaborating Center for Partnerships in Health through Education, Service and Research." aclithero@salud.unm.edu , the Center is housed in the HSC Office for Community Health on the first floor of the Family Practice Building. A diverse group of faculty from the different HSC colleges, institutes and centers participates in the Center which helps to support other international endeavors at the HSC. The geographic range of the Collaborating Center will be global and its focus is:
- Reducing Health Disparities
- Integrating Primary Care and Public Health
- Linking Education and Service Innovations
- Promoting the Health of Indigenous Peoples
- Disseminating Innovations
"WHO Collaborating Centers" are institutions such as research institutes, parts of universities or academies which are designated by the Director-General of WHO to carry out activities in support of WHO programs in a wide variety of areas such as the health workforce, communicable diseases, mental health, and chronic disease. This coveted designation is awarded in recognition of the important role UNM HSC plays globally in developing and sharing innovative strategies in community health-oriented education, service and research. These strategies and models have been emulated by institutions in many other countries and UNM HSC frequently trains international visitors from countries as diverse as Brazil, China, Uganda, Australia and Pakistan. UNM HSC has been successful in receiving grants from public and private sources such as the Kellogg Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation to support these efforts.
