Each person we get to know enriches our life.  Most of the patients I work with have more than one chronic health condition.  Helping to improve their functioning and quality of life is intellectually and emotionally rewarding for me.  The cultural, economic and geographic diversity of our state is unique in the US; it affords me continued delight and interest as I travel to clinical sites around the state.

Neuropsychiatric approaches to mental disorders encourage the integration of new findings in neuroscience with recognition of neuronal and habitual patterns and social or societal influences.  The Continuum of Care Project serves to promote health and medical care for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the state.  We are part of a collaborative effort with other university, state Department of Health, and insurance providers is working to enhance the training of professionals to increase access and quality of mental health care services for people with disabilities around the state.

Recent topics that I have mentored medical students or residents for their research projects include: non-epileptic seizures in survivors of traumatic brain injury, mental illness diagnoses in people with autism spectrum disorders, mood changes in people who have received vague nerve implants for epilepsy.
