 About The HRRC and IRB Committees

The UNMHSC Human Research Review Committees and the UNM Institutional Review Board are designated to protect the rights and welfare of research participants by reviewing and monitoring research involving human volunteers.

Human Research Review Committee (HRRC)

Biomedical and behavioral research involving human subjects to be conducted at or sponsored by the UNMHSC, or that is conducted by or under the direction of a faculty, staff or student of the UNMHSC, or which uses any confidential information of patients at the UNMHSC, cannot commence until it has been reviewed and approved by an HRRC. In addition to reviewing all biomedical and behavioral research at the UNMHSC, the HRRCs will review biomedical research proposals, or other research proposals requiring access to the UNMHSC patient population submitted by UNM faculty, staff, and students.

VA Medical Center Researchers
MIND Research Network Researchers
UNM Researchers (study with a biomedical component)
Researchers with other Affiliated Entities

Institutional Review Board

Social/Behavioral research involving human subjects to be conducted at or sponsored by UNM, or that is conducted by or under the direction of a faculty, staff or student of UNM or which uses any confidential information of participants, cannot commence until it has been reviewed and approved by the IRB.

Committee Structure

The HRRC and IRB committees have diverse membership as required by Federal Regulations:

    Every committee is composed of scientific as well non-scientific members (includes but not limited to ministers, community representatives, lawyers, ethicists, scientists, and health care professionals.)

    Additionally representatives from the following departments are required when reviewing a study involving a respective study.

    • VA Medical Center (study involving subjects from the VAHCMC)
    • Pediatric Department (study involving children or neonates, or pregnant women)
    • Prison Community (study involving prisoners)

Commitment required from Committee Members

The members of the HRRC and IRB volunteer their time to serve on these committees.

Members are expected to:

  • Attend one meeting per month
  • Thoroughly review study documents prior to meeting
  • Participate in meeting discussions
  • Serve for a minimum of 3 years

Members undergo training prior to having voting privileges.
