The University of New Mexico Health Science Center

Established in 1994, the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center is the largest academic health complex in the state. Located on the University of New Mexico campus in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the HSC combines its four missions areas - education, research, patient care and community outreach - to provide New Mexicans with the highest level of health care.

University of New Mexico Hospitals (UNMH) Medical/Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (MCICU) has been awarded the Beacon Award for Critical Care Excellence by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN). The award is specifically designated to recognize the nation’s top pediatric, progressive, and adult critical care units across a multitude of hospitals. It is presented to ICUs that achieve the highest quality patient outcomes, and demonstrate excellence and innovation. The UNMH MCICU is one of 133 ICUs out of approximately 6,000 across the nation to receive the award. The Beacon Award is the highest achievement possible for an intensive care unit.

The University of New Mexico Cancer Center

The University of New Mexico Cancer Center is a National Cancer Institute-designated cancer research and treatment center. Our new 90 million dollar facility has brought together some of the brightest minds in cancer treatment to New Mexico. The Thoracic Oncology Clinic at the UNM Cancer Center is a multidisciplinary program combining the expertise of pulmonary medicine physicians, thoracic surgeons, medical and radiation oncology physicians in one clinic.

The New Mexico Veterans Administrative Medical Center

The New Mexico Veterans Administration (NMVA) Medical Center serves as the tertiary care center for veterans in New Mexico, West Texas, Southern Colorado and the “Four Corners” part of Arizona. All aspects of adult cardiac and thoracic disease entities are managed by the New Mexico VA for this veteran population. There are two half day clinics devoted to cardiac and thoracic surgery respectively. The thoracic resident rotating at the VA provides coverage at these clinics with our faculty. There are four operative days per week, with cardiac cases being conducted on three of these four days. One day per week is dedicated to thoracic surgery cases. The cardiac caseload is weighted towards coronary revascularization and acquired diseases of the aortic valve. However, all aspects of cardiovascular surgery are performed by the cardiothoracic service, including thoracic aortic aneurysm surgery and mitral valve surgery. The thoracic experience leans towards surgical management of lung and esophageal carcinomas, as well as surgical management of pleural infections. The NMVA experience is a unique and an integral part of the University of New Mexico, School of Medicine, Thoracic Residency Program. .
