Our Lady of Sorrows

Artist: Paul Harris

Sculpture Description/Background

Our Lady of Sorrows was given to the University in 2001, in loving memory of Billie Cannedy Earnest by her sister and brother-in-law Peggy and Douglas Kirkland. Billie Earnest had strong connections with UNM – both donors received their degrees here and her son – Bob Earnest worked for the University for more than 28 years before retiring in the spring of 2003.

In the 1940’s during his tenure as an art student here at UNM, Paul Harris decided his calling was to become a sculptor. Harris has dedicated his life to the pursuit of discovering and exposing his own sense of uniqueness in form and vision, which is manifested in his work. Our Lady of Sorrows is made of bronze and was casted at New Mexico’s premier Shidoni Foundry. Harris currently lives in Bolinas, California.
