Emeritus Executive Vice President for Health Sciences

R. Philip Eaton, M.D.

R. Philip Eaton, M.D. has served as the Executive Vice President for Health Sciences at the University of New Mexico since December 1998. Eaton was the Chief of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism from 1975 to 1998, and was Associate Dean for Research in the School of Medicine from 1996 to 1998. From 1990 to 1997, he served as the Director of the Clinical Research Center. Eaton joined the University of New Mexico in 1968 and is currently a Professor of Medicine and Professor of Mathematics and Statistics.

Education

Eaton is a graduate of the College of Wooster with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Chemistry with a minor in Biology. He earned his M.D. degree at the University of Chicago School of Medicine and completed an internship at Barnes Hospital, Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri. Following his internship, Eaton held the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the Public Health Service, serving at the National Heart Institute. After returning to Barnes Hospital to complete his medical residency, he then completed an Endocrinology and Metabolism fellowship at Washington University.

Research Interests

Eaton is a nationally recognized researcher in endocrinology, with particular interest in diabetes. His prolific career includes numerous sponsored research projects--among them a collaboration with Sandia National Labs, which led to the invention and patent of the first implantable, programmable insulin pump and ongoing development of the glucose sensor. Eaton’s breakthrough research has significantly improved the care and treatment of people with diabetes.

Eaton is a member of numerous professional societies including the Association of American Physicians and has authored more than 200 articles, book chapters, and books.
