HSC Media

System Requirements

Viewing HSCMedia presentations has certain user system requirements in order to work properly. All required software components linked to below are free downloads.

The requirements are:

  1. Platforms: Viewing presentations is supported on Windows 98 or greater and Macintosh System 9 computers or greater. Your computer must be equipped with a sound card and system speakers or headphones. Your computer video graphics adapter and monitor must also be capable of displaying, and set to display, resolutions of at least 800x600. If you are accessing content via a corporate firewall, you may need to contact your system administrator regarding the availability of a streaming media port.
  2. Media Players: Viewing presentations on Windows-based computers requires Windows Media Player 7.0 or later. Click here to download the latest version of Windows Media Player. Macintosh users on current Macintosh platforms should use Windows Components for QuickTime. Macintosh users on older platforms can also use existing Windows Media Player 7.1 for Mac OS 8.1 to 9.x or Windows Media Player 9 for Mac OS X depending on which version of the Macintosh operating system is installed. Click here to download the latest versions of Windows Media Player components for Macintosh. Be sure to download the version that is appropriate for your computer and operating system. From time to time the player may inform you that you need to install newer codecs to play a presentation. Choosing not to allow these codecs to be upgraded will prevent you from viewing presentations.
  3. Bandwidth Considerations: Most HSCMedia presentations are offered in low and high bandwidth versions. In most cases the system itself will test your connection before starting the presentation and deliver the version that is appropriate for your connection speed. In some cases, you can choose which version to view. If you connect to the internet using a phone line modem, please choose the low bandwidth version. Users who are on campus or have either cable or DSL internet connections can use the high bandwidth version.
  4. Multimedia Presentations: Presentations that include synchronized PowerPoint presentations must preload the slides that are included in the presentation before beginning to play. Preloading guarantees that once the presentation starts that the presentation will run smoothly without interruption. The preload time varies depending on the speed of your internet connection and the number of PowerPoint slides contained in the presentation. For long presentations with lots of slides, this preload time may take several minutes especially over low bandwidth (i.e. modem) connections.
