The Privacy Rule
- The Standards for Privacy of Individually Identifiable Health Information (Privacy Rule) establish a set of national standards for the protection of certain health information.
- The Privacy Rule assures that an individual's health information is protected by limiting the ways that covered entities (health plans, health care providers and health care clearinghouses) can use a patient's medical information.
- These new standards also provide patients with access to their medical records and more control over how their personal health information is used and disclosed.
