In addition to the residency program, the department offers fellowship positions in both pediatric anesthesia and pain management.

Pediatric Anesthesia Fellowship:

The Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellowship at the University of New Mexico provides twelve months of subspecialty education and training in all aspects of pediatric anesthesiology.  This program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.  Subspecialty training is at the CA-IV level and begins after satisfactory completion of an ACGME-accredited residency in anesthesiology.  Education and training concentrate on all phases of perioperative anesthesia care for patients undergoing both inpatient and outpatient surgical procedures, as well as for patients undergoing diagnostic and non-operative procedures outside of the operating room.  The didactic program and clinical curriculum also include pediatric pain management, advanced life support and critical care of neonates, infants, children and adolescents.  Trainees actively participate in division and departmental educational activities relevant to their training.  Under faculty supervision, trainees assume graduated responsibility for instruction and supervision of medical students and junior residents assigned to the service.  In addition, trainees are encouraged to participate in clinical and/or basic science research relevant to the discipline of pediatric anesthesiology.

Pain Management Fellowship:

A one year fellowship in pain management is offered by the Department of Anesthesiology.  Dr. Robert Zuniga is the program director for the fellowship. Dr. Robert Zuniga is also the medical director of the chronic pain clinic.  He has extensive experience in diagnosing and treating a wide variety of pain conditions.  In particular, he has excelled at many invasive procedures such as regional anesthesia techniques, dorsal column stimulators, intrathecal medication pumps, and kyphoplasties.  Acute pain management experience is also part of the curriculum. Candidates interested in applying for this fellowship should contact Dr. Zuniga through the Department of Anesthesiology’s main office phone number: 505-272-2610.
