Enter the BATCAVE
- UNM's State of the Art Human Patient Simulation Facility
The Department of Anesthesiology was
instrumental in the development of a world class high fidelity human
simulation laboratory at the University of New Mexico. The Basic Advance
Trauma Computer Assisted Virtual Experience (B.A.T.C.A.V.E.) is a joint
venture between the School of Medicine and University Hospital. This
multi-disciplinary Educational Facility is dedicated to improving assessment,
procedural skills, patient management and enhancing overall competency
at all levels of patient care.
This
pioneering venture is the only such Educational Facility in New Mexico.
The principal teaching, practice and interaction methodology is mannequin-based
to enhance the simulation experience. In addition to traditional, passive
mannequins, the facility also utilizes a computer-driven human simulator,
with lifelike features and simulated human responses to interventions,
procedures and medications providing the facility with a unique, state-of-the-art
tool. This complex, human simulator mannequin is capable of being programmed
to demonstrate a wide variety of life threatening situations, as well
as common disease processes. Currently, all anesthesia residents rotate
through the BATCAVE in small groups for weekly sessions throughout learning
modules that is typically 6-8 weeks long. The curriculum is a revolving
2 year program that is tied to the resident lecture series.
In addition to the human patient simulator, the BATCAVE
also includes an endoscopy simulator. For more information on the BATCAVE,
