The UNM Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention (CHPDP) was asked by the New Mexico Public Education Department to evaluate the Before and After School Physical Activity and Nutrition Program (Before/After School Program). The Before/After School Program is now in its third year of implementation (2007-08) in approximately 15 schools or school districts in the state, as well as in three other projects. The Before/After School Program’s evaluation team, led by Principal Investigator Linda Peñaloza, is examining both process and outcome indicators relevant to the implementation of the program, which is an important component of the New Mexico Governor’s anti-obesity initiative. The program is intended to promote positive nutrition habits and increase physical activity among elementary school students in the state. Results of the evaluation will be used to make on-going recommendations about improving the various grant programs and will influence future funding decisions.
