MISSION STATEMENT
The
University of New Mexico School of Medicine strives to improve and enhance human
health through education, research and patient care. It is committed to
providing continuing medical education (CME) to practicing physicians so that
they maintain and continuously improve their knowledge, skills, and attitudes
throughout their professional lives.

improve the knowledge, skills and attitudes of physicians;
b. to
provide physicians with information that is topical and relevant to their area
of practice;
c. to
introduce physicians to new ideas and techniques as they
become
available;
d. to
help physicians develop and maintain lifelong habits of study, education, and
receptivity to changing ideas in the practice of medicine;
e. to
foster a climate of practice that is consistent with both cost containment and
exemplary health care;
f. to
encourage understanding of the ethical and legal issues affecting the practice
of medicine;
g. to
emphasize performance improvement through the principles of continuous quality
assessment;
h. to
foster interdisciplinary education to promote
collaborative
practice.
Content of CME activities
will address the needs of practicing physicians, and will include all areas of
biomedical knowledge, clinical skills and patient care, interpersonal and
communication skills, ethics and professionalism, practice-based learning and
improvement, and systems-based practice. The special needs of New Mexico’s
physicians for CME that address the issues of cultural competence in caring for
New Mexico’s diverse ethnic and socioeconomic groups will be a priority of the
Office of CME. Program content will address the disease areas identified as
high risk by the New Mexico Department of Health.
CME activities are directed
to New Mexico physicians, but include physicians throughout the country.
Reaching New Mexico physicians practicing in rural, underserved areas of the
state is a priority.
The full spectrum of types of activities will be offered to meet the needs of
physicians with diverse learning styles, including: Grand Rounds, Lecture
series, Case-conferences, Minisabbaticals, enduring materials, web-based CME,
email-based CME, and other media as appropriate.
The CME program of the
University of New Mexico will help physicians provide the highest quality health
care to their patients in all of the various ethnic and socioeconomic group that
characterize the population of New Mexico. Outcomes assessed will include
physician satisfaction with learning opportunities, physician learning, and
applications to clinical practice.
