> Abstracts of the Coral Snake Antivenom Conference, sponsored by the NIH Office of Rare Diseases and organized by the FDA/CBER and held in Washington, DC, January 28, 2009, have been published in the December 2009 issue of the Journal of Medical Toxicology. Here's the reference: J Med Toxicol 2009; 5(4): 250 - 256. We anticipate that the abstracts from Venom Week 2009 will be published in the Journal of Medical Toxicology early in 2010. There is now a link on the navigation pane to a copy of the abstracts.

> From the FDA: The expiration date of lot 4030026 of Wyeth North American Coral Snake Antivenin (Micrurus fulvius) (Equine) has been extended by a year to 31 October 2010. An announcement to this effect has been made on the FDA website at http://www.fda.gov/BiologicsBloodVaccines/SafetyAvailability/ucm155092.htm

> The FDA Blood Products Advisory Committee voted unanimously on 7/20/09 to recommend that the FDA accept animal evidence of efficacy, along with volunteer human PK and safety studies, for the initial licensure of a coral snake antivenom. The FDA would still have to formally accept this recommendation (they are not obliged to follow the recommendations of their advisory committees), and an existing manufacturer of a coral snake antivenom has to submit an Investigational New Drug Application, but it means it is more likely that we will eventually have a replacement antivenom for the current FDA-approved product, which has been out of production for several years and is likely to start running out this coming year. I will update this site with news of interest as it occurs.
