Supporting Students One Purchase at a Time

By Ana Heredia

Kristina Lee is a Level 3 nursing student and president of the Student Nurses Association (SNA). She got involved with SNA through her mentor as a Level 1 student and has really enjoyed her leadership role. She is trying to make the best of this tough economy by volunteering at SNA, at Sigma Theta Tau, doing an internship at UNMH and studying for the NCLEX-RN exam. Before applying to the UNM College of Nursing, Lee was an emergency medical technician (EMT). As an EMT she admired how the nurses cared for patients and how they knew what was going on with them anatomically.

Lee describes herself as “fast paced” and that is why she is currently doing an internship at UNMH in the ICU and loving it. Even though the accelerated nursing program is very demanding, she believes that it is worth it because it has taught her time management, how to deal with stress and she likes the way the teachers encourage her and work with her in the simulation lab. Thanks to the simulation lab, she is able to gain firsthand experience without running the risk of hurting a patient.

Lee also believes that by attaining a bachelor’s degree in August 2009, she will have gained the knowledge that will give her the power to succeed as a registered nurse. After graduation, Lee would like to get some hands-on experience for a couple of years and then return to the UNM College of Nursing to acquire a master of science in nursing degree with a concentration as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner.
