My computer appears to be frozen, what do I do?

A frozen computer can mean many different things, ranging from an operating system (OS) crash or just an application crash.  Try using ctrl+alt+del to see if you can successfully close any programs.  If you cannot you may to force shutdown the system.  A forced shutdown can be done by holding the power button for about ten seconds.  If this does no remedy the problem, contact your computer's manufacturer or if it is a school computer, CON tech support (e-mail).

I cannot open a document, what do I need so that it opens?

The following is a list of commonly-used software here at the College of Nursing:

*Microsoft Office 2007 is required to properly view XML-based Office files (*.docx, *.pptx).

What is *.docx and *.pptx?  They look like Office files, and I have Office.  Why can I not open these files?

As stated above, Microsoft Office 2007 uses different file handling than previous versions of Office.  However, some of these documents can still be opened with an Office Compatibility Pack.

What if I cannot afford Microsoft Office?

HSC offers students Microsoft products at a reduced price.  To buy directly from Microsoft use The Ultimate Steal (for $59.95).  If you do not want to purchase this software, there are some free alternatives out there.  OpenOffice is a free office-esque software package that will open pre-Office 2007 documents.

To open Office 2007 Word documents with OpenOffice, one will have to:

  1. Download the Office Compatibility Pack from Microsoft

  2. Select the *.docx file in Windows Explorer

  3. Right-click the file and select Save As...

  4. Save the document as *.doc

  5. Open with OpenOffice

I use a Mac, how do I view these common media types?

Microsoft Office
Office documents can be viewed with either Office 2004* or the newly released Office 2008.

*Office 2007 documents require a compatibility pack to open in Office 2004

Adobe Acrobat
You're in luck!  Apple's Preview application (available by default on your Mac) opens *.pdf files (as well as a multitude of other files.)  More in-depth editing can be done with an official Adobe Reader Application.

Windows Media Player
By default your Mac will not play *.wmv files.  To enable the default QuickTime player to work with these files, download the free program Flip4Mac.

What is a RSS feed , and why should I care?

RSS is short for "Really Simple Syndication."  Think of it as a newspaper subscription in which you are always kept informed, and it is free!  Most modern browsers include some sort of RSS reader.  A RSS feed is like a bookmark, except it is a bookmark that updates every time you open the browser, and it will link you to recent updates on the UNM College of Nursing.  If you want to keep up-to-date with the CoN, click here to subscribe to the RSS feed.  You can also visit the homepage and locate the image at the bottom of the section.
