Mary Wright is a Clinical Educator at the College of Nursing, Health Sciences Center, University of New Mexico. Mary earned her ADN in 1975 from the University of Albuquerque, her BSN in 1989 and then her MSN (dual focus in Community Health and Nursing Administration) from the University of New Mexico in 1993. Mary’s clinical practice is in obstetrical nursing and she has done (and continues to do) a variety of nursing roles related to various aspects of maternity nursing. Her primary clinical passion is intrapartum nursing and is certified in Inpatient Obstetrics and is also a certified Childbirth Educator. Mary is licensed in New Mexico as an OB CNS and is a consultant for clinical maternity nursing issues at the University of New Mexico Hospitals (UNMH). She has developed several teaching projects for UNHM including the postpartum hemorrhage scenarios using a human simulator. In addition to her maternity nursing clinical practice, Mary was also involved in the initial design and implementation of shared governance for nursing at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque, NM, during the mid-1990s and is still very interested in shared governance issues in nursing. Mary started teaching full-time at the College of Nursing in 1998. Her content areas in nursing education focus on all aspects of maternity nursing and on family nursing. She is also involved in teaching in the University of New Mexico, Health Sciences Center Rural Health Interdisciplinary Program (RHIP). In addition to her teaching, Mary has also been a leader in curriculum revision and new curriculum design and is now currently involved in new course development. She has also been involved with the Student Nurses’ Association (SNA) and is currently one of two SNA faculty advisors. While Mary’s primary nursing interest and passion is in maternity nursing, she is also passionate about family-centered nursing care, interdisciplinary education, shared governance for nursing, and in learning and utilizing best teaching practices with students.
