Caminando Juntos: Support for Hispano Cancer Survivors, A volunteer organization based in Albuquerque.

La Colcha: Sobreviviendo el Cáncer Con Fé, Esperanza y Dignidad
(The Quilt: Cancer Survivorship with Faith, Hope and Dignity)

Caminando Juntos: Caminando Juntos Support for Hispanic Cancer Survivors is a volunteer organization based in Albuquerque. Our mission is to provide support, advocacy, education, and awareness about cancer to New Mexico Hispanos, and to serve as a resource to healthcare professionals working with the Hispano community.

La Colcha: The Hispanic cancer survivorship photo-quilt you see before you “Sobreviviendo el Cáncer con Fé, Esperanza y Dignidad” (Cancer Survivorship with Faith, Hope and Dignity), is one approach to raising awareness about cancer in our community. La Colcha symbolizes the healing process and the hopefulness of cancer survivorship. The yellow sash woven between the portraits represents the strength of our cancer survivors. The saints at each corner of the quilt, St. Agatha, patroness of breast cancer, St. Peregrine and St. Michael of the Saints, patron saints of cancer, and La Virgin de Guadalupe, reflect our spiritual faith and the particular importance of prayer in our lives. The teal colored cornerstones represent the loving support we give to each other. Although each portrait is different, the teal sarape border symbolizes the bond that unifies cancer survivors and their unique backgrounds. The strong threads of the sarape signify the countless sources of support we rely upon for strength such as spiritual beliefs, family and friends. The zigzag stitching throughout the quilt symbolizes the cancer organizations and the medical community of doctors, nurses, technicians, and researchers working diligently to find a cure and improve our quality of life. This stitching holds the entire quilt together.

The Photos: The photos in La Colcha portray life stories of Hispanic cancer survivors who have had many different types of cancers such as uterine, colon, breast, cervical, prostate, leukemia, thyroid, testicular, kidney, colorectal, and lung. The quilt reflects our people of all ages: men, women, children, and families. For many of the survivors and their families pictured in the quilt, La Colcha draws upon the strength of culture, particularly the importance of la familia and coping through faith. These portraits represent nuestra comunidad Hispana and convey dignidad, respect and love for life!

Caminando Juntos, Cancer Support group

Who are we? Caminando Juntos, Support for Hispanic Cancer Survivors (CJSHCS) was founded in September 1999. The group arose out of the inspiration and vision of the late Camilla Pargas Harrison, who passed away on September 4, 1999 from breast cancer. Camilla had a desire to improve, empower and educate Hispanics about cancer and cancer survivorship in New Mexico. CJSHCS is made up of cancer survivors, family members, and other concerned individuals who volunteer their time to raise awareness in the area of cancer survivorship among Hispanics in New Mexico.

What is our mission? Our mission is to provide support, advocacy, education, and awareness about cancer to New Mexico Hispanics and to serve as a resource to health care professionals and others working with the Hispana community.

When do we meet? The Caminando Juntos, Support for Hispanic Cancer Survivors (CJSHCS) gathers on the 4th Saturday of every month from 11:00 and 1:00 PM at Casa Esperanza, located at 1005 Yale Blvd NE, North of Lomas NE and Tucker (near the Golf Course and across from the UNM Family Practice Building) Tel: 277-9880.
