The UNM Cancer Center is opening a new cancer
clinic in Las Cruces in
November 2006!
A large part of our mission at the UNM Cancer
Center is to make sure that all New Mexicans
have access to outstanding cancer care. That’s
why we’re thrilled to announce the opening of our
first center in southern New Mexico this fall.
Located on the campus of Memorial Medical
Center in the new professional building right next
door to the Memorial Ikard Cancer Treatment
Center, UNM Cancer Center South will provide
residents of Las Cruces and Doña Ana County
with easy access to state-of-the-art cancer care,
including clinical trials of the latest drugs and
therapies. According to Paul Herzog, CEO of Memorial Medical Center, “This partnership is
an excellent way to make sure our patients in
Southern New Mexico get the most advanced cancer
care possible without having to drive up to
Albuquerque.”
This new facility will encompass 5,300 square feet
and feature nine exam rooms, plenty of space for support
services like nutrition counselors and social
workers and an infusion suite with a beautiful
view of the Organ Mountains. Two full-time medical
oncologists, who will make their homes in Las
Cruces, will provide care supported by visiting
specialists from the UNM Cancer Center.

The UNM Cancer Center, the Official Cancer Center
of the State of New Mexico and one of the nation’s
premier National Cancer Institute-Designated Centers,
was recently ranked as one of America’s best cancer
hospitals. Together, UNM Cancer
Center and Memorial Medical Center will now be
working side-by-side to provide the highest level of
cancer care in Southern New Mexico.
November 2006 Cancer Center staff visited the Las Cruces Cancer Clinic and provided this visual evidence of the current status of the Clinic.
Memorial Medical Center has partnered with the UNM CRTC and Radiation Oncology Associates to provide residents with state-of-the-art diagnosis and treatment.
Nearly 600 southern New Mexico residents had to travel to Albuquerque last year to receive such care.
"Now New Mexicans living in the southern part of the state can receive the best cancer care much closer to home where they have the loving support of their family and friends," said Cheryl Willman, director and chief executive of the new center.
The UNM Cancer Center is one of 60 National Cancer Institute-designated centers in the nation. It has more than 60 physicians and 110 research scientists on staff.
Plans call for the Las Cruces center to eventually have two full-time doctors, and specialists from Albuquerque are expected to visit regularly.
Also, a telemedicine link between the Albuquerque and Las Cruces centers will allow real-time consultation between physicians, meaning patients will have access to a wealth of expertise.
UNM staffers and medical oncologist Katie Rasila moved into an office on the Memorial Medical Center campus in early December. They have already seen more than 90 patients at the center.
At its opening Tuesday, the center was decorated with posters saying: "Hope Just Moved Closer."
"We're hoping to have a huge impact on your community. We're here to stay. . . . And together we'll be closer to a cure," Willman said.
Paul Herzog, chief executive for Memorial Medical Center, said his organization is excited to work with UNM Cancer Center in an effort to provide the highest level of cancer care for southern New Mexico.
