Years ago "planned giving" meant making a bequest to a charitable organization through a will. But planned giving today includes wills and many other vehicles tailored to address a variety of situations for people at all levels of giving ability.
You may wish to join the ranks of those, who include in their will or trust a bequest to The University of New Mexico Foundation, Inc. and direct gift to the UNM Cancer Center.
Life insurance also provides a variety of giving options - small and large. For example, have you ever considered that the dividends from a policy might be assigned to the UNM Cancer Center to make your annual contributions? Or, on the other hand, that a future major gift can be made simply by making the UNM Cancer Center the beneficiary of an existing policy that has outlived its original purpose? Simply making "The University of New Mexico Foundation, Inc." a contingent beneficiary of a life insurance policy may provide invaluable support to a future student or cancer research or treatment program that is important to you.
Many types of charitable giving/financial planning opportunities are available, which are not only of tremendous benefit to UNM, but also provide you with income and tax benefits in return. One of the easiest - and most secure - is the charitable gift annuity. Simply stated, you give cash or securities to the UNM Foundation (specifying them for the UNM Cancer Center) This gift annuity will pay you an agreed-upon percentage for the rest of your life. In addition, you may enjoy certain tax advantages, and a portion of your gift will go to the Cancer Center program you have specified.
You have probably saved for your retirement in various ways - possibly through an individual retirement plan. This will be of great benefit to you and your spouse. But if given to the next generation, well over half of your hard-earned assets may go to pay taxes. Simply making the "University of New Mexico Foundation, Inc." a contingent beneficiary of your IRA may lead to a tremendous gift to the UNM Cancer Center if you so designate. (The same problems - and possibilities - exist with some other types of retirement plans as well.) We encourage you to discuss this possibility with your family and advisors.
Last year, the UNM Foundation formed a recognition society to honor and thank alumni and friends who have made UNM part of their financial plans. These are people with foresight, who know that the university will continue to be an important force in the 21st century. They want to be a part of the enterprise while securing their own financial future and planning for family needs. Membership in the New Horizons Society is open to individuals who have remembered UNM through any planned giving vehicle listed below:
-
Bequest through a will
-
Gift through a living trust or other noncharitable trust
-
Charitable remainder trust
-
Charitable lead trust
-
Charitable gift annuity
-
Remainder interest in a personal residence
-
Gift of life insurance
-
Beneficiary designation in retirement plans
-
Pooled income fund gift (when available through UNM)
Members receive benefits ranging from welcome letters and lapel pins (specially created by New Mexico jeweler, Ray Tracey) to planned giving newsletters, invitations to certain UNM events and subscriptions to major UNM and UNM Foundation publications. A $1,000 minimum gift is required to join and there will be no distinction made regarding the size or type of the planned gift. Gifts may be revocable or irrevocable. The only required documentation is a response card to be completed by the donor indicating gift intention and the form of the gift. All members will receive the benefits of the society; those who prefer to remain anonymous may do so.
