World-class Cancer Research and Treatment Institution
Situated in the heart of New Mexico’s stunning landscape, the University of New Mexico Cancer Center in Albuquerque is one of the nation’s premier cancer research and treatment centers. As the only National Cancer Institute designated center in the state, and the Official Cancer Center of the State of New Mexico, the UNM Cancer Center is uniquely positioned to provide world-class cancer care to the region’s richly diverse population. Home to more than 81 board-certified oncology physicians, representing every cancer specialty and more than 120 cancer researchers, supported by more than $50 million in grants annually, the UNM Cancer Center is the state’s largest and most experienced team of cancer experts. The UNM Cancer Center partners with Los Alamos National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, New Mexico State University and the Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute to conduct incredible multidisciplinary research.

Who we serve
Last year, the UNM Cancer Center served more than 8,000 cancer patients in more than 82,000 ambulatory clinic visits. More than 50 percent of adults and virtually all the children diagnosed with cancer in the state are treated at the UNM Cancer Center, and our patients come from every county in the state. To accommodate burgeoning growth, the UNM Cancer Center is currently building a new, $90 million, 206,000 square foot, state-of-the-art cancer care facility, which will house the latest cancer treatment technology in a beautiful and compassionate environment. Additionally, to ensure that all New Mexicans have access to outstanding cancer education, screening and treatment programs, the UNM Cancer Center is building a cancer care network in partnership with community health systems and physicians statewide. Linked to the UNM Cancer Center in Albuquerque are active programs in Las Cruces (The UNM Cancer Center – Las Cruces), Santa Fe and Farmington.

What we offer
The Core Facilities at the UNM Cancer Center provide a wealth of dynamic resources; we are pleased to offer Flow Cytometry, Microscopy and Cell Imaging, Genomics, Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, Tissue Repository and Tissue Analysis, Biostatistics, Clinical Protocol and Data, Management/Medical Informatics, Human Imaging, and Animal Models and Imaging. In addition, the UNM Cancer Center also houses the New Mexico Tumor Registry, a repository of incredibly diverse samples, which provides unparalleled understanding of cancer within the many people groups represented in the region.

We are currently recruiting dedicated faculty for the following Endowed Chairs and Professorships:

*These Endowed Chairs and Professorships are part of our Population Sciences, Cancer Health Disparities and Cancer Control Program.
With a translational focus on lung, gastrointestinal, breast and skin cancers, members of the UNM Cancer Center’s Population Sciences, Cancer Health Disparities and Cancer Control Program are involved in the full spectrum of population health sciences study. Research ranges from cancer surveillance, epidemiology, biomarker identification and validation and primary and secondary prevention, to community-based participatory research, intervention and dissemination. Members of the program are particularly focused on determining the genetic, environmental, social and behavioral factors that account for the striking differences and changing patterns in cancer incidence and mortality in New Mexico’s multiethnic populations, primarily Hispanic, American Indian and non-Hispanic Whites. In addition to the development of population-based cohorts for many of its research studies, the program is interfacing with particularly rich community-participatory research networks in New Mexico including: 1. RIOSNet, a clinical research network of 275 community health care providers; 2. The Center for Native American Health and The Albuquerque Area Indian Health Board Native American Research Center for Health focused on the development of culturally appropriate cancer prevention and education programs in New Mexico’s Indian Nations, tribal communities and rural settings; and 3. Project ECHO, a virtual telemedicine, telehealth network.
