Emergency Medicine Residency Requirements |
Field
Experience/Ride-Alongs:
Each Resident must complete a minimum of 30 hours of
field ride along experience. A certain proportion of that time is required
with certain local services. (See required field experience below.) The
remainder may be fulfilled with additional time, either with the required
services, or in combination with the optional services listed below. |

Learning Objectives:
|
|
1.
Develop basic understanding, from a field perspective, of the role of EMT’s
in our EMS system, including: patient care responsibilities and duties, and
understanding of local protocols, approved pre-hospital drug list and the
EMT scope of practice. |
|
2. Understand the general approach to patient
care in the pre-hospital setting, including: |
|
A. |
How the EMS system is configured in Bernalillo County. |
|
B. |
How EMS personnel interact with other EMS agencies and
with hospital care providers, by observing and listening to dispatches to
field crews, radio reports from field to base hospital, and direct
interpersonal interactions. |
|
C. |
Observing Paramedics, EMT-I’s, and EMT-B’s, perform
problem-based assessments and treatment of patients and how scope of
practice and resource and time-frame limitations affect pre-hospital care. |
|
D. |
A review
of the equipment and drug box capabilities of EMS providers. |
|
3.
To gain an appreciation of how per-hospital care is perceived by providers
and to share perspectives. |
|
A. |
To get to know paramedics and better understand their
perspectives and problems. |
|
B. |
Informal knowledge sharing with medics is encouraged. |
|
Required Field Experience: |
|
1.
AFD: 8 hours. 8 hours with EMS Field Supervisor and/or Medical Director; or
4 hours with EMS Field Supervisor (QA Captain) and 4 hours at an AFD
Station with and AFD rescue and/or pumper. |
|
2.
AAS: 8 hours. As 3rd rider on the ambulance. |
|
3.
BCFD: 4 hours. Preferably with the EMS commander; alternatively, spend 4
hours with station #2 in the South Valley. |
|
Optional Field Experience: |
|
1. Rio Rancho Fire and Rescue |
|
2. Lifeguard Air (Requires completion of
special training). |
|
3. PHI Air (Requires completion of special
training). |
|
4. Selected Medicine Bow Events/State Fair
Clinic. |
|
5. Selected Urban Search and Rescue
Drills/Exercises. |
|
6. Selected DMAT Drills/Exercises. |
|
NOTE: 12 hours of EMS ride-alongs must be completed
during the first 15 months of residency prior to becoming an MCEP. The MCEP
class and examination will be given Between October 1 and December 31 to all
2nd year residents. It is expected that all residents will be
authorized to act as MCEPs’ prior to January 1 during their 2nd
year of residency. |

Ride-Along Attire: |
|
Appropriate attire is
required during a ride-along. Remember, you will attend accident scenes
on roadways and entering people’s homes; you may be assisting in their
care. Therefore, shorts, tee shirts and sandals are inappropriate. Dark
slacks and dark shirts are recommended. Hospital scrub tops are
acceptable. Wear your hospital ID badge. |
