THE FACILITIES |

Trauma
care is provided through the collaboration of the trauma
team and the emergency physicians. The trauma team is notified immediately of
the arrival of any patient with unstable vital signs or penetrating trauma to
the central area of the body. The ED physicians are responsible for initial
resuscitation and airway management in all patients. Trauma patients are
assessed and treated in collaboration with EM and Trauma. Patients not meeting
criteria for immediate trauma consult are assessed by the ED. The trauma team is
then consulted if the work-up reveals a condition requiring hospital admission
or general anesthesia. 1,500 patients are seen in the trauma room yearly about
300 of which are pediatric.
The Pediatric ED is moving
to 24/7 coverage with the move into the new Pavilion. All urgent or critically
ill pediatric patients are seen in the Peds ED during those times, including
trauma. The medical director is part of the EM faculty and has a joint
appointment in the department of Pediatrics. The attending staff includes 5
Peds-EM fellowship trained physicians and others drawn from the EM faculty.
Residents from EM, pediatrics and family practice rotate through this facility.

Bernalillo County residents and is a referral center for the state and
surrounding areas. In addition to the level I trauma center, it houses a
regional burn center and the state’s most advanced neonatal and pediatric
intensive care units. Outpatient services and faculty offices are housed in
an Ambulatory Care Center completed in 1991.
