UNM Department of Emergency Medicine- Residents' Biographies

Graduates 2008

Albuquerque and UNM have been very good to me and my family. I love my house and my neighborhood full of children. I love the easy access to mountains and streams and trails. I am giddy with joy to not be an intern anymore. It was one of those experiences that was great to have done but painful to do. As a "senior" resident every day in the ED is an affirmation of my choice of EM and UNM. The faculty are fantastic and always striving to make the program better. I feel that I am truly a part of the department and not just "loading the trucks."

The years I've spent in New Mexico as an ER Resident have been some of the fastest, hardest and best years of my life.  I still love what I do, but I've come to appreciate how important my life outside the hospital is also.  Running has always been an important mental outlet for me.   However during residency I've started getting into 'ultra-running' (anything longer than a marathon).  I ran my first ultra marathon this year down in the Gila Mountains.  It was a 38.5 mile trail race and I loved it.  I'm now interested in studying the effects of ultra-running on the body and better understanding the needs of ultra-runners during events.  I'll be part of the medical crew this summer at The Badwater Ultramarathon in July (135 miles through Death Valley).  I also have a long-standing need to travel.  Before starting residency I spent time in Namibia, Botswana and Zambia and hope to incorporate more travel into my career.  I'm not sure what I'll do after residency, but I'm considering a fellowship in critical care medicine

The move to New Mexico for residency has been great. The weather here is un-beatable, the outdoors are awesome, the faculty and staff are outstanding, and the patients are sick….. really sick. Residency has kept me plenty busy but has also given me plenty of opportunities to play in the outdoors, spend time with my wife, Jill and raise our one year old daughter, Edie. We’ve enjoyed getting to know the other residents and faculty, many of whom I now consider some of my best friends. You won’t find a better group of attendings, or a happier group of residents anywhere.
