UNM Department of Emergency Medicine- Residents' Biographies

Jeremy Gonda

Originally a Southern California beach baby, my family moved when I was in the 5th grade. I finally found them about three years later in Reno, NV…boy were they surprised to see me… just kidding (they have always been very loving and supportive)! It was in Reno that I learned to love skiing, camping, Lake Tahoe, rock climbing, and biking. I thought I would save some money by staying at home and attended the University of NV Reno for my BA in psychology and then the University of NV School of Medicine.

During my education, I worked as an EMT at a hospital, a water park, and as part of a ski patrol team. I also took a two year detour to El Salvador where I picked up some decent Spanish, some unforgettable intestinal amoebas, and grew to love the Latin American culture and people. Once back home, I married a beautiful Hawaiian, my best friend Rebecca and we now have two (and another on the way) perfect children. We are very excited to be joining the family of UNM and to be training in such an excellent program. Plus, we want to figure out what all the talk of the “green chili” is about.

Drew Harrell

I am originally from the flatlands of eastern North Carolina and the town of Kinston.  College took me to Virginia and, afterwards, I headed west.  Have been fortunate to live in some wonderful areas of the country- Washington, Utah, Wyoming, and now New Mexico.  Met and fell in love with a wonderful woman, Andrea, from Washington state who, like me, has worked as a Wildland Firefighter.  We've been married for almost four years.  She is a NICU Nurse working towards her NNP.  Along with both structural and wildland firefighting I've worked as a paramedic in Salt Lake and Yellowstone (ask Steve McLaughlin about the Yellowstone River/Howard Eaton Trail Run/Swim !!), as an ED tech in a busy trauma center, in a bike shop, selling cellular phones, as a construction laborer, and a graciously short stint in a factory making artificial crab meat.  Trust me on this one just stay away from it!  We have two cats, Poot and Henry, and a yellow lab, Zula, scurrying about the home. I have been a collector of things  two-wheeled and a bike commuter.  We've got 6 between the two of us currently.  As well as riding I love running, hiking, and most any activity that involves water.  Bringing a sailboat to the desert southwest might prove to be foolish, but I'm going to give it a try!

Kenlyn Hobley

Hi everyone!

I’m Kenlyn.  I am originally from Detroit but have been in New Mexico for almost 10 years.  I had quite a few different jobs before finding my way into medicine, some of which included:  Trainer for Steak & Ale corp., process server and crowd control for the various concert arenas and theatres in Detroit where my personal record was 24 consecutive Sesame Street Live performances within 6 days.  Those Pre-school crowds know ho to rock!  Somehow I resisted the urge to run away with that tour group and went to nursing school instead.  I worked as an emergency nurse for 9 years gaining great experience while realizing I really wanted to be a physician.  Eventually, I came to New Mexico to work with the Indian Health Service with my partner who is also a physician.  Despite intending to only stay for a year I found that I loved it here, became addicted to green chile and stayed to complete my undergraduate degree and medical school at UNM.

My free time is filled with training for my first ½ marathon, remodeling our house (move over Bob Villa) and toying with photography.  I am so excited to be staying here for my residency with such a fantastic and friendly group of faculty, residents, and staff.  I look forward to working with you all.
