UNM Department of Emergency Medicine- Residents' Biographies

Andy Elsberg

Undergrad: Hampshire College, University of Alaska Fairbanks
Med School: University of Washington School of Medicine/ Alaska WWAMI.
Hometown: Grew up in Maryland, Anchorage, AK is home now.

Why Albuquerque: I spent an elective month here. The crew in the ED rocks, the residents, faulty and department staff enjoy each other, the patients are diverse in culture and pathology, and there is an understanding that the ED serves a rural state. The mountain trails are 15 minutes from downtown, the cycling is great, and New Mexico is a big place to explore on days off.

.....Anything else interesting: I ran for president of my high school as an Anarchist. I believe I won. There was a sigh of relief when I left early to go to college.

Life Before Med School: National Outdoor Leadership School instructor teaching backcountry skiing, caving, climbing, and mountaineering in Wyoming, Washington, and Alaska. Alaska Mountaineering School/Alaska Denali Guiding, Arctic Wild guide on Denali and surrounding glaciers and in the Brooks Range. Exploration Geology prospecting and sampling for diamonds in the eastern Canadian Arctic and Greenland. Lived 30 miles outside Fairbanks with my wife Shannon and 40 dogs, training for long distance sled dog trips and races including the Yukon Quest and Iditarod.

Hobbies: As much time as possible with my wife and kids, sharing beautiful places with them. Admitting the fact I love our minivan. Skiing, cycling, sea kayaking, hiking, climbing. Acoustic thrash guitar, rewriting my songs so my kids can hear them……

Worst/Best job: Worst-Prep cook at Spanish Peaks brew pub Bozeman MT. I got fired. Emptying poop bags after a 14 day caving course into the Lovell, WY sewage lagoon. I’m good at that….I didn’t get fired. Best- 3 weeks of prospecting on foot with Shannon 300 miles north of Yellowknife, NWT.

Favorite Band: Today its Hamell on Trial….but there is never just one.
Favorite Movie: Harold and Maude
