UNM Department of Emergency Medicine- Residents' Biographies

Daniel Lancefield

Undergrad: Reed College, economics major
Med School: University of California, San Francisco
Hometown: San Francisco, CA

Why Albuquerque: The combination of a great hospital, good learning, and a strong sense of camaraderie made UNM an easy choice. I also liked the idea of being in a place where there is a fighting chance to pursue my aforementioned hobbies.  It is hard to imagine having easier access to fishing, mountains, and camping.  Also, Albuquerque’s food and weather are very persuasive.

.... Anything else interesting: I grew up in San Francisco until the age of 14, and despite the urban environs, managed to gain a love of the outdoors that persists to this day. I spent much of my youth camping with my folks, fishing the streams of California, and even indulging in competitive fly casting, a sport some might doubt exists – it does, honestly.  For high school, I went a school in Southern California that required all incoming students to care for a horse during the entirety of their first year.  So, yes, I am an exquisite horse groomer, and even a passable equestrian.  I subsequently attended Reed College in Portland, Oregon, where I majored in economics, became an expert hacky-sacker, and managed to take a year abroad in Madrid, Spain. Upon my return, I decided to focus on pursuing medicine as a career.  A brief detour through Rutgers University, near where my parents currently reside in New Jersey, allowed me to gain the necessary prerequisites, before heading back to San Francisco to attend UCSF.  I look forward to pursuing my love for the outdoors and penchant for acquiring new hobbies in the fabulous setting that is Albuquerque.

Life Before Med School: I basically went straight from college to more college, doing a post-baccalaureate premedical program at Rutgers University before starting medical school.

Hobbies: Fly fishing, back-packing, camping, photography, wood-working, grilling

Worst/Best job: Best: Packing burros to carry camp gear into the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. Worst: Cold-calling small business owners trying to sell them pay-roll services – it is even less fun than it sounds.

Favorite Band: Pavement, Velvet Underground
Favorite Movie: The Outlaw Josey Wales, Fletch, Lord of the Rings Trilogy
