Emergency Medicine Critical Care Elective

This is an advanced career track rotation that builds on the basic knowledge and skills obtained during the basic rotations in Emergency Medicine and Critical Care Medicine. It is primarily intended for students interested in pursuing a career in emergency medicine and critical care. As the subspecialty of Critical Care Medicine is becoming a more popular career path for emergency physicians, this rotation is intended to propagate that interest and highlight the crossover between the two disciplines.

Three Sessions being offered:

  • November 10 to December 7, 2008
  • December 8 to January 4, 2009
  • January 5 to February 1, 2009

 Goals:

  • To develop a comfort level tending to the critically ill medical and surgical patients in the Emergency Department.
  • To learn the basics of resuscitation of the various shock states.
  • To gain an appreciation for the crossover between Emergency Medicine and Critical Care Medicine.
  • To learn the fundamentals of ICU care for a variety of pathologies, including traumatic illness, neurosurgical emergencies and critical medical conditions.
Objectives: At the end of the clerkship, the student should be able to:
  • Differentiate the various shock states and comprehensive approaches to their treatment.
