Emergency Medicine Critical
Care

Three Sessions being offered:
- November 10 to
December 7, 2008
- December 8 to
January 4, 2009
- January 5 to
February 1, 2009

Prerequisites:
- Prior completion of general Emergency
Medicine Clerkship is mandatory.
- Prior ICU clerkship is helpful, but not
mandatory,
- Must be in fourth year (Phase 3 at UNM) and
in good standing.

The EM Critical Care
elective is made up of
five major components:

Clinical:
- Seven shifts in the ED
during high volume times, focusing on the critically ill patients.
- One week as a subintern on
the Trauma/Surgical ICU Service.
- One week as a subintern on
the Neurosciences ICU Service.

Didactic:
- Two
weekly lunchtime Trauma/Critical Care lectures, Mondays and Thursdays from 12
p.m. to 1 p.m..

Dedicated Educational/Mentoring sessions with each of the three Emergency
Medicine specialists.
- Monthly
multi-disciplinary Critical Care conference.
- Each
student will present a well researched, evidence based, case presentation that
they have encountered during the month. This should address one or more EM
Critical Care topics.

Simulation:
- Resuscitation skills
are honed during simulations using our state of the art "Simulation Lab".
- Students will have
several didactic sessions, practicing resuscitation scenarios on the
patient simulator.

Evaluations:
- Student evaluation of
EM Critical Care Elective and faculty.
- Student feedback will
be provided and evaluated by faculty and residents at the end of each ED
shift or ICU week. Overall the student will be graded using the following
Paradigm*:
1.) 60% based on clinical performance.
2.) 30% based on performance during didactic sessions.
3.) 10% based on the presented lecture.
* An outstanding grade will be given to students who achieve greater that
85%.
