UNM ED Wilderness and International Medicine

Are you coming in march 2007? then read this! This is a course designed for physicians, residents, and medical students. We accept residents from approved graduate medical education programs, Phase 3 medical students from the University of New Mexico, as well as extern medical students. All students must have completed six weeks of medicine, six weeks of surgery, and another month of a primary care specialty rotation. Physicians may be from any specialty. International participants are also welcome. Beware - we take only twenty participants (maximum) - so sign up early!

Our course fee is $330 per participant; payable to "UNM Department of Emergency Medicine". You are not in the class until payment is received; you will receive a confirmation letter thereafter that you are in the class. Because of the need to plan each course in advance, full refunds are granted if cancellation occurs prior to January 16; otherwise, a refund minus $100 will be returned if cancellation occurs up to the day before the class. Full refunds are granted to those on the waiting list who do not get into the class.

The fee does not include housing (we have a list of cheap housing), or equipment rental. But, it's still a great deal - wilderness medicine conferences charge a lot more for only a few days of conference, with additional surcharges for "hands - on" classes. You won't find a better course for the money (VALUE). If you want CME credit, please notify us.

We offer this month-long course in March of each year. This is an ideal time in New Mexico, where the outdoor teaching environment is suited for winter and summer outdoor activities. We guarantee that this popular course will be one of the best experiences in your career! We also offer week-long courses in high altitude and diving medicine, as well as certification courses (WALS or AWLS) and a month long disaster and remote medicine course in October. Please email dmacias@salud.unm.edu for details.

To register, call Annette Lucero at (505) 272-5526 or email at AnLucero@salud.unm.edu , who will provide you with registration information. Please send your CV, as well as, information regarding your outdoor or travel experience. We use this information to tailor the course for you.

Those interested are asked to periodically review the web page, and may correspond with the director from October of the preceding year up to the beginning of the course for specific queries and applications. Thank you for your interest.
