CARLOS ARGUELLES,
M.D.
Dept. of
Emergency Medicine
|
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR
MEDICAL DIRECTOR, ADULT EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT
Med School: University of New Mexico, School of Medicine.
Residency: University of New Mexico, Emergency Medicine.
I just can’t seem to leave
this place. Born on the third floor and now working on the first.
Albuquerque is a wonderful place to live, gently nestled between the glowing
Sandias and the eerie enchantment of the Rio Grande. I’ll bet a travel
brochure could use that. I completed residency from guess where in 2002.
Jennifer and I have three darling small children who never fight and share
all the time. Two untrained and overweight dogs round out the peaceful and
serene east mountain getoffmuhland compound that we call home. While many
in the department rock climb, I tend to do this only when chased by
Bigfoot. Outside of the ED, I do everything with my wife and kids. Okay
maybe not everything.

GILLIAN BATY,
M.D.
Dept. of
Emergency
Medicine |
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR
DIRECTOR, EMERGENCY ULTRASOUND
Med
School: University of Utah
Residency: University of New Mexico
Fellowship: Christiana Care Health System, Delaware
Interests:
Emergency ultrasound, sunny rock, collaborators.
Lucky for me
residency grads often end up practicing where they did residency - I forgot to
sell my house, so that worked out nicely. Although a good chunk of my family is
back east, the west has been my home for most of my life. Another one of those
outdoor nuts drawn to New Mexico, I was also a little bit of an outdoor snob.
Utah is a pretty nice place to go to college (think climb any afternoon you like
on your choice of rock), spend a few years being a ski bum (Park City arguably
has some of the best mountain biking out your front door in the country), and go
to med school (think where else can you celebrate finishing your morning gross
anatomy practical exam with an afternoon tram at the Bird?). But New Mexico has
completely won me over. And Abbey, my slightly-overweight blue cattledog doesn't
chase the roadrunners, so that's made us more welcome in the neighborhood (cats,
that's another story).
A year honing my
skills in Emergency Ultrasound with Paul Sierzenski, one of the pioneers of the
field, was the best thing I could have done after residency. And the time I've
spent with our residents since my return is the best part of my job. Okay, okay,
except perfecting billing and coding ...

DOUGLAS BINDER,

Dept. of
Emergency
Medicine |
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR
MEDICAL DIRECTOR, CARE ONE
Med
School: SUNY, Syracuse
Residency: Rhode Island Hospital, Brown University Program in Internal Medicine, and Jacobi Hospital,
Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Emergency
Medicine
Interests: Medical Education
I'm a relatively recent emigrant to New Mexico, here by way of New York. I came out at my
wife's insistence, kicking and screaming the whole way. She had tired of the dirt and
noise and endless rudeness of New York - I was just starting to warm up to it. And though
I sorely miss the Nha Trang Noodle House on Baxter Street, I have come to the conclusion
that she was quite right to insist that we move out here. Not only do I now have the
advantage of spectacular weather and scenery, but I am privileged in being able to work
with an extraordinarily talented group of residents and a highly motivated, accomplished
faculty. I look forward to meeting with many of you during the upcoming interview season.
