I arrived in New Mexico in
2000 after spending 3 months working for the Himalayan Rescue Association in
Nepal. I chose New Mexico for its unique combination of outstanding residents,
down-to-earth but highly productive faculty, endless academic opportunities and
a beautiful outdoor environment. I was fortunate enough to meet my wife Stacia,
a photojournalist, here in New Mexico. We live in the Village of
Corrales
with our menagerie: cat, dog, horses and chickens. My hobbies include
hiking, telemark skiing, raising and training horses, martial arts, tennis,
flying, travel and above all else, eating.

JUDITH
BRILLMAN,
M.D.
Dept. of
Emergency Medicine |
PROFESSOR
ASSISTANT DEAN, GRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION
Director, Faculty Development
Med School: University of Pittsburgh,
School of Medicine
Residency: University of Arizona
Fellowship: Computer Medicine Fellowship,
University of
Pittsburgh
Interests: Infectious disease, education and triage.
I first became
interested in the Southwest during a two month community medicine medical school
elective in Tuba City, Arizona. After finishing
Emergency Medicine residency at the University of Arizona in 1985, I was on the
Emergency medicine faculty at Stanford University. There I was instrumental in
designing the residency program. However, I wanted to leave Stanford politics
and urban sprawl.
Attracted by
Albuquerque's weather and beauty and the wonderful
reputation of this department, we relocated in January, 1989, and I became the
Clinical Director of the Emergency Department. After being clinical director for
three years, I gave that up to become Medical Director for Lifeguard Air
Emergency Services. For seven years I was the residency director which provided
me with some of my greatest satisfactions, challenges and sleepless nights of my
career. It was very gratifying to work with such superb residents. However,
looking for new challenges, I stepped down as residency director to do more
research and other graduate medical education activities. In the coming years I
will be responsible for faculty development in our department.
My areas of
interest are infectious disease, syndromic surveillance and triage. I have
edited two editions of “Infectious Disease in Emergency Medicine.” My interests
in infectious disease and syndromic surveillance have resulted in a number of
activities, many of them involving syndromic surveillance for Bio-terrorism
related illness. I implemented a computerized surveillance program through
emergency departments which identified anomalies in patient presentations
indicating potential epidemics.
I have 2 daughters,
Ruth 14, and Eve 11 and one cat. We enjoy many things about New Mexico,
including the blue sunny sky, the shimmering light, and the proximity of the
mountains for hiking and skiing. As a “recovering” Philadelphian, I could never
move back east.

JEFFERY
BULLARD-BERENT,
M.D.
Dept. of
Emergency Medicine
|
ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR
Medical Director, Pediatric
Emergency DEPARTMENT
Assistant Residency Director
Med School: Wayne State University, School of Medicine, MI
Residency: Pediatric Residency-LAC-USC, Los Angeles, CA
Interests:
I am a Pediatric Emergency
doc who has practiced in a variety of settings prior to joining UNM in 2002.
I've practiced general pediatrics and Pediatric Emergency Medicine in
California, Oregon, Nevada, Michigan, and finally New Mexico. I'm
incredibly lucky to really love what I do. I see it as a privilege to take
care of other people's kids, and like to insure that its done right.
Working with residents and medical students keeps me from getting
intellectually lazy and forces me to re-evaluate how and why I manage
patients in every day. Currently I am the Medical Director of Pediatric
Emergency Medicine and the Assistant Residency Director. I am very
interested in continuous quality improvement, and medical simulation. As I
watched my wife go thru med school and residency, I became acutely aware of
how students and residents are often denigrated and vowed to never fall into
that practice. I was fortunate to find an entire Emergency Medicine
Department that has embraced that view.
