AMY
ERNST, M.D.
Dept. of
Emergency Medicine
|
PROFESSOR
Med School: Tulane
University, NOLA
Residency: Louisiana
State University (Charity Hospital), NOLA
Interests:
I recently
joined the faculty at UNM (August 2004). I have been working as an attending in
Academic Emergency Departments for over 15 years. UNM is now my 4th
site. I served as IRB (institutional review board) chair for 6 years at
Vanderbilt University and at UC Davis.
My work in
Academia largely centers on research. My main area of interest is intimate
partner violence (IPV). I recently validated a survey tool, the ongoing
violence assessment tool (OVAT) to search for ongoing IPV. I’m also interested
in other areas of injury, namely elderly and childhood. Ethics research,
especially concerning exception from informed consent, has also been of interest
to me because of my work at the IRB and studies of pain management.
I am
pleased with successes in IPV research with residents (and, of course Steve
Weiss) over the last year. Christie del Castillo will be presenting our work on
IPV and witnessing IPV as children at the upcoming SAEM (society for academic
emergency medicine) in SF at the plenary session. Only 5 abstracts were chosen
for this session and I am very proud of Christie’s work. This study was very
unique in that we used a touch screen computer during randomized 4 hour shifts,
automatic anonymous data collection, about 50% Hispanic population, and we used
our validated OVAT. Also Jaime Aagard will be presenting at the same meeting
(an oral presentation) on “who says no”, ie those who refused participation in
our IPV study. Paul Hansen is submitting an outcomes study of IPV intervention
for children who witness IPV to ACEP in Oct (in New Orleans).
I am
married to Steven Weiss, MS MD FACP, FACEP, also a professor in the Department
of EM at UNM. We love working together both shifts and research. We have one
daughter, Natalie, a cat “Sammie” and the best dog in the world, “Daisy”, a
bischon frise. We keep very busy with our animals and love to travel (except
Sammie).
I am happy
to have joined the faculty here at UNM. Albuquerque is an interesting and
exciting place to explore although very dry and high elevation for a sea dweller
like me. Yes, Katrina affected me and my family greatly; however it has made our
family and friends closer and
New Orleans
is still my favorite city!

de Bruxelles, Belgium

Interests:
As a
physician, I have experience caring for both adult and pediatric patients. I
received my M.D. in 1985 from U Libre de Bruxelles in Belgium and completed
three years pediatric residency training at Baylor College of Medicine in
Houston, Texas. I have worked the past seventeen years in my sub-specialty of
pediatric emergency medicine: fourteen years in St Louis at university
children’s hospital level one trauma centers serving principally intercity
children and the past two years at University of New Mexico’s (UNM) Pediatric
Children’s Hospital serving multi -ethnic Latino, Native American and Anglo
populations. I have a M.A. in developmental psychology, 1976, and worked as a

Since early 1990’s I have cared for both adult and pediatric patients during
volunteer visits to the Navajo Nation IHS health unit at Kayenta, Arizona.
My
experience with Doctors Without Borders /Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF)
began in 2003 when I spent six months as an MSF-France field doctor in Khartoum,
Sudan opening an emergency medical, hygiene and nutrition program for “street
neonates” at Mygoma Orphanage. I completed a field project with MSF in Aura,
Uganda the fall 2005 assisting in the evaluation of a Prevention of Maternal to
the Child Transmission (PMTCT) AIDS project. Back in the US, I continue to
advocate MSF interests locally with outreach lectures to university and
community based groups.
International projects in which I am currently involved includes: Working with
interested pediatric residents here at the university to develop a rural model
HIV treatment center in Africa.

GREENBERG, M.D.
Dept. of
Emergency
Medicine
|
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR
Med School: George Washington
University
Residency:
Emergency Medicine, University of New Mexico
Fellowship: EMS &
Disaster Medicine, University of New Mexico
Interests: Disaster &
Operational Medicine, EMS Medical Direction, EMS Special Operations,
Disaster-related Policy Development and Public Administration, Wilderness
Medicine, International Emergency Medicine, and Education and Disaster
Medicine Research.
Hello! I was born and raised in Southern California---and I love
Albuquerque! The mountains, the clear skies, and the near absence of
traffic make living here both easy and exciting. The clinical experience
here is intense, and the nurses, techs, and other folks we work with are
fantastic. Also, if you’re interested in EMS or disaster medicine, the
opportunities at UNM are uniquely ripe with potential. Outside of work, I
enjoy camping, hiking, or anything that takes me outside with my wonderful
wife and my lab, Kobi.
