Chair, Department of Emergency Medicine
Chief of staff, unm hospital
Chief Medical Officer, new Mexico disaster medical assistance team

Masters of Public Administration: The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (1989).
Med School: East Carolina University, Greenville, NC

Internship: University of New Mexico, School of Medicine
Residency: University of New Mexico, School of Medicine

Interests: EMS injury prevention initiatives and trauma systems.

As Chairman of the Department, I interact with the various components and departments of the Health Sciences Center, represent the Department to the larger medical community, develop our budget, manage the personnel, and assist faculty in developing research and educational activities.   An administrative aspect of the job that I particularly enjoy is the opportunity to apply operations research methods and process simulation to the many complex hospital operational issues that impact emergency medicine.

I have focused much of my academic and administrative activities on hospital and health system preparedness.  I have held positions as the Medical Director for the New Mexico Office of Health Emergency Management and the Director for the UNM Center for Disaster Medicine.  I am also an active member of the DMAT and Director of the Disaster Medicine Fellowship.

Another major area of interest is EMS. In a prior career, I was a paramedic/firefighter and EMS administrator.  In 2007, I concluded a seven year term as the State EMS Medical Director but remain active in the EMS community.

I have three young children – two boys and one girl - and an aquarium full of fish. My wife, Allison Richards, is an orthopaedic surgeon with subspecialty training in hand surgery.  I enjoy fly-fishing for rainbows in northern New Mexico, light tackle fishing in tropical waters, skiing, and spending time with my children.

Resident, medical student and EMS education.  Disaster Medicine.

I am another transplanted Pennsylvanian (like Drs Kresovich, Brillman and Leo), but my route has been circuitous:  from the Mid West to New England to the Deep South to the Pacific Northwest, and finally here.   Some of the finest people in Emergency Medicine at the nursing, resident and faculty levels work at UNM, and it’s a privilege to be a part of this department.
