DUSADEE SARANGARM, M.D.

Dept. of Emergency Medicine

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR

Med School: University of New Mexico, School of Medicine
Residency: Emergency Medicine, University of New Mexico

Interests: Education, Bioinformatics, Global Health

Though born in Thailand, New Mexico has been home for most of my life. I grew up here, and then stayed for my undergraduate degrees, medical school, residency and now as a junior attending. A little vanilla, I know, but who can blame me? Great weather all year round, a supportive yet challenging work environment, and colleagues I am lucky enough to call friends. As of now, my professional interests include medical education, bioinformatics and international/global medicine, but I am sure they will continue to expand and evolve. When not at work, I enjoy traveling (yes I leave the state on occasion), eating (a lot) and dancing. I have one husband, no pets and one plant that my husband tells me has mutated to not require nutrients since I forget to water it regularly. It lives, and like me, is a work in progress.

If you are a potential resident reading this, feel free to email me with questions about the residency program, interviews, NM or just because.

STEVEN SEIFERT, M.D.

Dept. of Emergency Medicine

PROFESSOR
MEDICAL DIRECTOR, NEW MEXICO POISON AND DRUG CENTER

Med School:
University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, Cincinnati, OH.
Residency: University of Arizona College of Medicine, Family Practice, Tucson, AZ.
Fellowship: University of Colorado/Rocky Mountain Poison and Drug Center, Medical Toxicology, Denver CO

Interests
: My research interests include snake envenomation and the epidemiology of poisoning. My career is a testament to what happens when you have trouble saying “no” and a short attention span.

I’m the Medical Director of the New Mexico Poison and Drug Information Center and a Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine. My position is a balanced mix of clinical, academic, educational and administrative responsibilities.

I've lived and worked in many places throughout the course of my education, training and practice, but I developed a deep affinity for the Southwest through my experiences working in a health clinic in Southern California, over a 20-plus year career in emergency medicine in Tucson, and now here in New Mexico. I love the topography, the mix of cultures and, of course, the weather. I bicycle when it’s clement and ski when it isn’t.

Some boring stuff: I received my B.S. degree with Honors and with Distinction from Cornell University and my medical degree from the University Of Cincinnati College Of Medicine. I practiced Emergency Medicine and served on the faculty of the University of Arizona Emergency Medicine Residency program. I’m certified in Emergency Medicine by the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM). I completed a Fellowship in Medical Toxicology at the University of Colorado/Rocky Mountain Poison and Drug Center and am certified in Medical Toxicology by the toxicology sub-board of ABEM. Following my Fellowship, I served on the staff of the Arizona Poison and Drug Information Center in Tucson, and then as the medical director of the Nebraska Regional Poison Center in Omaha for six years, before coming to New Mexico in July, 2007.

My wife, Sandy Mishkin, is a nurse specializing in geropsych care. We have one child, Sara, who is currently in medical school.
